A dedicated room for clay, woodwork and messy paint, built where the old storeroom used to be.
For eleven years the art materials lived on a trolley that was wheeled between classrooms, which meant that anything genuinely messy had to be planned a week ahead. From September it has a room.
The old storeroom behind the science room has been opened out, given a north-facing window, a deep sink at child height, and a floor that can be hosed down. There is a kiln, which we have wanted for six years, and a woodwork bench with real tools on a rack rather than in a locked box.
The room is not timetabled. Children go when their work takes them there, the same as any other area, with an adult present whenever the kiln or the bench is in use.
It will also open for the holiday art club, which has been running out of the dining hall and will be glad not to.
